Minister Avcı opens first Migrant School in Turkey for education

Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı inaugurated the Migrants School for the 2 thousand 500 children of the seasonal agricultural workers who migrated to Eskişehir province’s Alpu township from southeastern Şanlıurfa. The school will also educate the workers.

Minister of Education Avcı speaking at the Alpu Seasonal Agricultural Workers Settlement said the Migrants School will not only be for the children of the workers but also for grownups.

Minister Avcı said the school and the project will provide many contributions to the children and added:

“I thank everyone for their contributions in the project. There is no doubt this project was undertaken as a service to our citizens here yet I believe we will also learn much from it. Above all we will see how various public establishments come together and work in harmony to perform good deeds. Turkey has a great population that is seasonal workers. What we can do for our seasonal workers is limited but with this project we will see how we can be of help to them, how we can expand such services to them in time. We can do all this through such projects. That is why this project will serve us as much as it serves you. We will also learn another angle on how we can serve you.”

“We will make such projects more extensive and effective…”

Minister Avcı said those living in the Alpu township know under what kind of conditions the seasonal laborers work and added “Seasonal workers toil under very hard conditions all over Turkey. We thank you for the hard work you perform. But are you getting enough for your toil? No you are not getting what you deserve. We are aware of this. Our project is undertaken to create awareness. This project will help us to create awareness among ourselves, then among public establishments and then among the public. Hopefully we will get the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Environment and Urban Development as well as the Office of the President of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) involved in this project and thus make it more extensive and effective. That is why we all have to support this project wholeheartedly.

Addressing the seasonal workers Minister Avcı said “I believe our brothers and sisters here will take the necessary steps to send their children to these schools. Please do not prevent our girls from attending these schools. We know how our women sisters are both performing house work and also work in the fields under very tough conditions. I believe for this reason our men will be much more understanding and send their wives to the schools. This project will teach us a lot. It will also help us to make such projects more effective.”

Minister Avcı also wished his condolences to the 15 seasonal workers who passed away in a traffic accident in the western province of Manisa. He wished their families patience and also wished the wounded speedy recovery.

After the speech Minister Avcı and his entourage had iftar dinner with the workers and the minister gave the children text books, books and pencils.

Besides Minister Avcı the ceremony was attended by Avcı’s spouse Semra Avcı, Governor of Eskişehir Güngör Azim Tuna and members of the protocol as well as the seasonal workers and their families.
