THE NEW CURRICULUM WILL BE IMPLEMENTED GRADUALLY STARTING FROM NEXT YEAR

The new curriculum the Ministry of National Education is preparing for all education levels from pre-school to high school senior grades, will be gradually implemented starting from "pre-school, primary school first grade, secondary school fifth grade and high school ninth grade" in the 2024-2025 school year.

Preparatory work for the curriculum change, which was initiated upon the instructions of the Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, started in June this year under the coordination of the Directorate General of Secondary Education.

Within the scope of the new curriculum process carried out at all levels of education, commissions were established in the relevant units within the Ministry.

Studies were carried out to determine the road map of the curriculum in the workshops organized by the commissions with wide participation including academicians, education stakeholders, education administrators and teachers.

The most widely attended workshop on the curriculum was held in Ankara Kızılcahamam last week under the name "Holistic Education: Century of Türkiye Model Curriculum Development Workshop".

It was emphasized at the workshop that the curriculum change carried out by the Ministry of Education aims to achieve a "holistic education" approach based on the versatile development of students in terms of mental, social, emotional, physical and moral aspects.

The need for simplification came to the forefront
The relevant directorate generals carrying out the studies on curriculum changes of the Ministry have also organized many workshops since June. In these workshops, opinions about the curriculum were received and reported from a wide range of people, from academics to education stakeholders, from education administrators to teachers.

It was highlighted that the curriculum needed to be simplified because it was generally too heavy and included too many subjects.

As the studies are completed, necessary changes will be made as a result of the evaluations of the field experts in the commission formed for each course. The curriculum change is planned to be shared with the public next month.

The new curriculum will be gradually implemented starting from "pre-school, 1st grade, 5th grade and 9th grades" in the 2024-2025 school year.

Emphasis on simplification in the curriculum
Stating that they are working on the curriculum change to cover all classes, Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin noted that with this change, they will not overload children with redundant information above their level and simplify all courses.

Emphasizing that there are repetitive subjects in primary, secondary and high schools, Tekin stated that they concentrated on studies to simplify or eliminate these subjects. Minister Tekin previously noted that some subjects were not explained with pedagogical methods and the subjects taught in primary and high school did not complement each other.
